KONSTANTIN URALSKY – Choreographer, Master Teacher, and Artistic Director
Konstantin Uralsky began his career after graduating from the Moscow Academic Choreographic School (the Bolshoi Academy) when he was accepted to join the Bolshoi Ballet. During his decade with the company, he toured worldwide as well as performed at home in major works of the Bolshoi Ballet’s repertoire, including ROMEO AND JULIET, THE NUTCRACKER, DON QUIXOTE, MACBETH, SWAN LAKE, THE SLEEPING BEAUTY, GISELLE, SPARTACUS, and many others. It was at this time that Uralsky decided to return to the academic world to pursue a career as an instructor and choreographer. He attended the State Institute of Theatrical Arts (GITIS), earning his degree in Choreography. In addition, Uralsky traveled abroad to study modern dance and jazz at the Palucca School in Dresden, Germany. In 1990, Uralsky arrived in the United States and since then has garnered the attention and admiration of audiences and dance critics internationally with his energetic and imaginative choreography.
From 1991 through 1997, Konstantin Uralsky held the position of artistic director for Ballet Iowa in Des Moines, USA, overseeing all artistic elements for the company and school. He choreographed over two dozen original works and restaged many nineteenth-century classical ballets. Among the original works are DOCTOR ZHIVAGO, THINKING OF PETRUSHKA, MACBETH, MORE THAN TWO TO TANGO, ADAGIO, SNOW WHITE, I GOT RHYTHM, CARMEN SUITE, ROMEO AND JULIET, THE NUTCRACKER, and BIRDS.
In addition to running Ballet Iowa, Mr. Uralsky also traveled the country providing master classes, seminars, private coaching, and choreography to professional ballet companies, ballet schools, and universities nationwide. The caliber of his teaching always brings excitement to students and teachers alike.
In 1998, Mr. Uralsky moved to New York, where he established the Ballet School on Long Island.
Konstantin Uralsky is also the founder and artistic director of the chamber ballet company, Ballet New York. For this company, he choreographed a number of new works, among them WANDERERS IN THE LIGHT, SOUNDS OF THE HOLIDAYS, and DANCES OF THE WORLD.
In June 2003, Uralsky premiered his two-act ballet WALTZ OF WHITE ORCHIDS at the New Opera House in Moscow. This was his first large work in Russia, commissioned by Ballet Moscow. Prior to the premiere, Uralsky was invited by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Russian Dance Association to choreograph a one-act ballet, STREET, for the Diamonds of the World Ballet gala, which premiered at the State Kremlin Palace in Moscow in April 1999.
In 2005, Uralsky was selected to choreograph a new version of Prokofiev’s ROMEO AND JULIET for the Chelyabinsk State Opera and Ballet Theatre, which premiered in September 2006. After the ballet’s great success, he was invited once again, this time to do a new ballet, EL MUNDO DE GOYA, based on the life and paintings of Spanish painter Francisco Goya. The new work received rave reviews and great reception from the audience. The success of these two ballets led to an offer for the position of Artistic Director of the ballet company. In April 2008, Konstantin Uralsky was named the new Artistic Director of the Chelyabinsk State Ballet company.
From September 2011 till 2020, Konstantin Uralsky was the Artistic Director of the Ballet of the Astrakhan State Opera and Ballet Theater. During this time, he built a new young ballet company, with a very strong ensemble of dancers, artistic staff, and an exciting repertoire. He choreographed a new version of SWAN LAKE, THE NUTCRACKER, DON QUIXOTE, ROMEO AND JULIET, WALTZ OF WHITE ORCHIDS, ANDREY RUBLEV (world premiere), PIAF. JE NE REGRETTE RIEN, and others. The new ballets have been highly acclaimed by critics and audiences. The Astrakhan Ballet company has toured in the UK, Germany, and China.
For nine years, Konstantin Uralsky held the position of Headmaster of the ballet division at the Astrakhan State College of Arts, which prepares professional ballet dancers. He also taught the methodology of classical ballet and choreography at the Moscow Institute of Theatrical Arts.
In the last few years, Konstantin Uralsky has worked as a freelance choreographer and teacher, staging ballets in numerous countries. Additionally, he has been teaching master classes in choreography, stage direction, and improvisation. Uralsky’s contributions continue to inspire dancers and audiences worldwide with his innovative approach and dedication to the art of ballet.
